PHYS 411 Classical Mechanics (Not offered 1997-98; to be offered 1998-99)
This course covers the principles of classical mechanics as well as some of its applications. Topics include non-linear systems, the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of mechanics, planetary motion, and the dynamics of rigid bodies. Towards the end of the semester each student will work on an individual project, the results of which will be presented in a 5- to 7-page paper. Evaluation will be based on weekly homework, the paper, a midterm exam, and a final exam. Prerequisites: Physics 142 and Mathematics 210.
