MUS 108 The Symphony (Not offered 1997-98; to be offered 1998-99)

A combined musical and cultural historical study of the symphony as observed in the late eighteenth through the twentieth century. Particular attention to Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Prokofieff, and Copland. Heavy emphasis on listening. Two lectures per week. Requirements: two exams, based on listening and readings, one short paper, and a final exam. No prerequisite.
