MUS 105 Upbeat, Downbeat: The Concert Experience (Not offered 1997-98)

This course is about learning to listen to music intelligently. Our emphasis will be on gaining an understanding and appreciation not only for the materials, structures and styles of a broad range of musics, but also for the contexts that shape our listening experiences today. Lectures will be designed around selected live concerts on campus, and will introduce students to important genres and styles of music spanning the Baroque through the twentieth century (such as the symphony, the jazz ensemble, chamber music, and vocal music.) Guest speakers will speak to issues of performing conducting, composing, and marketing music today. Attendance at selected concerts is required; evaluation will be based on a listening journal, several concert reports, a midterm and a final. Two lectures per week. No prerequisite, and no prior musical training assumed.
