MATH 460(F) Axiomatic Set Theory
Set theory is the language of modern mathematics. But can we trust this language? Any flaw in the theory of sets could conceivably spread (like a computer virus) throughout the rest of mathematics, so it makes sense to examine the concepts on which our language rests. This course develops the rigorous Zermelo-Fraenkel Mostowski theory of sets, considering the Axiom of Choice and its equivalents, and the arithmetic of ordinals and cardinals. Evaluation will be based on presentations, problem assignments, and a final exam. Prerequisites: two 300-level mathematics courses.
