HIST 288(S) Modern Latin America/s: Past and Present*

This course will survey the vast and varied historical terrains of Latin America (including the Caribbean) in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Specific topics will include independence and the process of nation-building; slavery and abolition; changes in landscapes and livelihoods; the region's evolving relationship with the United States; struggles for democracy and social justice; and contested meanings of nationhood and national "development."
Evaluation will be based on class participation, an interpretation of a set of primary documents, a critical review essay on a course-related theme, and a take-home final exam.
