HIST 233(F) Russian and Soviet History, 1855-1991
A survey of the main social, political, economic, and intellectual forces that shaped Russian and Soviet history from the end of the Crimean War to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The course is designed in particular to compare and contrast three processes: the efforts of the tsarist r#gime to foster and contain social and economic change during the late Imperial period, the development of the Stalinist system in the course of the attempt by the Soviet r#gime to realize its revolutionary ideals, and the efforts of successive Soviet leaders to reform the Stalinist system after the death of Stalin in 1953. Discussion/lecture course. Evaluation will be based on class participation, a final self-scheduled exam, a map quiz, and several short essays based on class readings. Group B
