This course critically engages the premises and practices of various approaches to understanding China and Japan. During the first half of the semester weekly meetings will focus on various theoretical perspectives on East Asia. The pitfalls of Orientalism will be reviewed and, for those who are already well versed in Edward Said's argument, William Connolly's identity/difference problematique will be explored. Theoretical issues will then be examined against various analytic perspectives on East Asia. During the second half of the semester, students will pursue independent research and present their work to the class. Prerequisites: Asian Studies senior majors.
