ARTS 387(F) Memory and Media (Same as English 395)

This is a thematic course in which students look at and produce works that deal with memory. Specifically, we will look at works that have very deliberately explored historical material by looking at the links between personal memory and national or collective memory. Course materials may include films and videos like Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust, Rea Tajiri's History and Memory, documentaries like Serbian Epics and Shoah and novels like Joy Kogawa's Obasan, William Faulkner's Absalom Absalom, and Jessica Hagedorn's Dogeaters. These materials will serve as a common framework for students working in a variety of media. Assignments will be thematic and production-oriented, and can be addressed in video, photo, visual arts, writing, performance, sound, or electronic new media. Prerequisite: one 200-level course in studio art or English. Enrollment will be limited to 15, with a limit of 10 students working in video. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors.
