AMST 302(S) American Studies in Theory
One of the most vexing issues of American Studies has been how to define its own theory and methodology. This course will enter the continuing debate by focusing on the ways that different theoretical models articulate the relationship between popular culture and power. We shall ask such questions as: How have scholars and theorists conceived the relationship between high-brow, middle-brow, and low-brow culture? How do cultural canons and icons function? (Should everyone read Moby-Dick? Does Madonna matter?) What is at stake in debates on such issues?
Evaluation will be based on contribution to class discussion and written essays. Open only to American Studies majors, or by permission of the instructor; normally to be taken in the Junior year but open to Sophomore prospective majors who will be away from campus the following spring semester.
