An examination of the ecology of marine and brackish water communities based on the principles of population and community ecology. Topics include larval ecology, productivity, fisheries biology, and the structure of marine communities. The organization of major marine communities, including intertidal, plankton, salt marsh, deep sea, and coral reef, is explored from the perspective of experimental studies. Lectures and laboratories, including coastal and near-shore field trips, two weeks on a sailing oceanographic research vessel, and a laboratory or field research project. Requirements: an hour test, a research project, and a final exam. Prerequisites: Biology 101 and 102 or equivalent or permission of instructor.
