An exploration of the major trends in British and American poetry between 1900 and 1945, centering on the radical aesthetic and formal shifts which took place during the Modernist movement, the changing authorial and public perceptions of the place and function of poetry in the period, the cross-pollinations and strains between the British and American literary traditions, and the writers' individual negotiations with the culture of their time. Readings will focus primarily on the poetry of W.B. Yeats, Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound, Marianne Moore and W.H. Auden. Format: discussion/seminar. Requirements: two papers (totalling 14 pages), regular journal entries or postings, and a final exam. Prerequisites: a 100-level English course, except 150. Enrollment limit: 25 (expected: 25).
