MATH 100(F) Quantitative Studies

This course is intended for all students-(first-year students and upperclass students)-who want to strengthen their basic arithmetic and algebraic skills, and to understand the central concepts of elementary mathematics. Topics will include: signed numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, exponents, logarithms, scientific notation, polynomials, algebraic fractions, linear and quadratic equations, and graphing. Concepts will be stressed in classroom lectures and discussions; techniques will be developed through daily assignments. Format: lecture. Evaluation will be based primarily on performance on quizzes and exams. Prerequisite: permission of the instructor. Depending on his or her performance on the diagnostic test administered at the beginning of the academic year, a student may be required to take Mathematics 100 or Mathematics 101 as a prerequisite for Biology 101, Chemistry 151, Chemistry 153, Chemistry 155, Computer Science 134, Economics 110 or 120, Mathematics 103, Statistics 101, or Physics 131, 141. However, a student need not be planning to take one of these additional courses in order to take Mathematics 100 or 101. No enrollment limit (expected: 6).
