LING 202 Sociolinguistics (Same as Anthropology 230 and Sociology 230) (Not offered 2002-2003)

In this course, we will investigate the complex relationship between language and its social context. The topics that we will discuss include the development of pidgins and creoles, multilingualism, language contact and variation, and the effects of variables such as a speaker's gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic status on language change and use. Format: lecture/discussion. Requirements: active class participation, problem sets, a class presentation and a final project. No prerequisites.
