HIST 393 (formerly 306) Urban Theory (Same as Environmental Studies 393) (Not offered 2001-2002)
Urban theory describes the varied intellectual attempts to explain the economic and social functions of cities and the class and cultural interactions of urbanites. The course begins with the German urbanists of the late-nineteenth century, turns to look at the focuses of social scientists such as Charles Booth in their analyses of London, and finally traces the intellectual origins of an America-specific theory of urbanity in the twentieth-century United States. Evaluation will be based on class participation, two short papers, and a final exam. Group A
