HIST 282(S) (formerly 262) African-American History From Reconstruction to the Present*
This course introduces students to the significant themes and events that have shaped the African-American historical experience from Reconstruction to the present. We will examine the social, political, and economic meaning of freedom for men and women of African descent as well as explore the political nature and development of African-American historiography. The course will give particular attention to such topics as the rise of Jim Crow, migration, urbanization, the Civil Rights Movement, as well as the legacy of the post-Civil Rights Movement era. Format: lecture/discussion. Evaluation will be based on class participation, two short papers, and a final exam.
