HIST 210(S) The Modern Middle East: 1500-Present
This course surveys the history of the Middle East from 1500 tot he present. The focus is on political, intellectual and social trends. Dominant topics in the course include the Ottomans, Shiism and the Safavid state in Iran, modernization and reform, the impact of colonialism and imperialism, nationalism, Islamism and contemporary approaches to modernity. Format: lecture/discussion. Requirements: six 4- to 6-page papers.
No prerequisite. No enrollment limit. Open to all classes. Groups C and D
