GERM 310(S) Margin/Movement/Mainstream: German Culture 1968-2001

In this course we will examine literature and film from the past 33 years, focusing on the ways in which subcultures and social movements have influenced and inflected dominant culture in Germany. We will begin with the 1968 student movement, which created the conditions of possibility for a range of movements emerging in its wake: terrorism, feminism, gay liberation, environmentalism, etc. We will also study the impact of emergent minority cultures, particularly Germany's large Turkish community. In the latter portion of the course we will address more recent phenomena, such as Ostalgie (nostalgia for East Germany), skinhead culture, and the techno/rave scene. Readings/viewings may include books and films in English translation by R.W. Fassbinder, Verena Stefan, Heinrich Böll, Margarethe von Trotta, Frank Ripploh, May Ayim, Heiner Carow, Thomas Brussig, Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Kutlug Ataman, and Roman Kuhn. No knowledge of German is necessary or expected. Requirements: one presentation, two shorter (5-7 pp.) papers, one longer (12-15 pp.) final paper.
