This course traces the structures and origins of the modern/postmodern self. The course assesses classical and contemporary theories of the self and explores how men and women experience and construct their selves through the prisms of gender, technology, work, social class, and sexual relationships. Special attention to the central political, social, and cultural tragedy of mass society-totalitarianism in its various forms-and its effect on modern/postmodern selves. Readings include selections from Freud, Arendt, Goffman, Marcuse, and Haraway. Requirements: Mid-term and final papers Class format: seminar
