This course introduces students to the major historical developments in Western Europe during the early modern period-such pan-European phenomena as the Reformation, the Witch Craze, the Military Revolution, the rise of absolutist states, the seventeenth-century crisis in government and society, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution and Napoleon, and the establishment of European influence around the world. Evaluation will be based on two short papers, a midterm and a final exam.
