ENGL 344 Imagining American Jews (Not offered 2000-2001; to be offered 2001-2002)

Jewish life in America has been the subject of some of the most interesting and highly regarded works of recent literature. Focusing on novels and stories by such writers as Abraham Cahan, Henry Roth, Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud, Grace Paley, Philip Roth, Cynthia Ozick, Louis Begley, Art Spiegelman and Allegra Goodman, the course will study the changing images of the Jew in fiction from 1917 to the present. Requirements: two 4- to 5-page papers, occasional student presentations in class, active participation in discussion, and a scheduled final exam. Prerequisite: a 100-level English course, except 150.
