To the Williams Community,

I am sorry to report that the College has learned of the death earlier this month of Charles D. Compton, the Ebenezer Fitch Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus, in Florida, where he'd lived for many years.

He was a mainstay of the Chemistry Department from the time he came to Williams in 1946 until his retirement in 1977. He taught the introductory course, served as chair, and advised pre-medical students. Generations of alumni in the medical field acknowledge his influence on them.

He wrote two influential textbooks and was known for his wry humor both inside and outside the classroom.

Before coming to Williams, he'd worked as a research assistant on the Manhattan Project.

A remarkable man, he left his mark on this college, his colleagues, and his many students.

Regards,
M. Schapiro
President
