Phase IV: Final Curricular Proposals from the CEP

Linked below are the CEP's final proposals for curricular innovation, including a short addendum. These proposals were discussed and voted on at the May 16 Faculty meeting. The vote represented a serious mandate for or against the curricular proposals in question. A "yes" vote for any proposal or designated piece of a proposal will indicate that the faculty wishes the CEP, CAP, Steering Committee, and other related groups to go to work on implementation details next year.

The proposals grew from ideas which came from faculty, staff, and students, beginning in September 2000 with the Call for Curricular Ideas; they were further shaped by wide consultation in many meetings and discussions on the curriculum in the winter and spring. Our debates were also informed by a variety of institutional research data.

Throughout the process of debating the various possible curricular innovations and ultimately shaping the proposals, we were guided by the overriding question: How would each curricular innovation under consideration enhance the value of a Williams education? Now, as we prepare to debate and vote on the final proposals, we hope that this question continues to guide our collective thinking.

Final Note:
The CEP would like to take this opportunity to thank the many faculty, staff, students, trustees, and alumni who participated so fully and constructively in this process. From the initial call for proposals through the small group and open meetings, the emails, letters, and personal messages, your visions, hopes, cautions, feedback, and support have brought us to the end of the curricular innovation process for this year. This kind of collective participation and open process would not have been possible without the information sharing capacities of the web, and we are very grateful to Heather Clemow, Publications Manager, Office of Public Affairs, and Tom Wintner, Associate Dean of the Faculty, for the tremendous amount and quality of work they have done on the Williams College Strategic Planning web site and to Tom for his many other valuable research and support activities of the work of the CEP this year.
