"The State of the Nation" by Founder of The Daily Kos, the Political Weblog, at Williams, January 16
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., Jan. 9, 2008 -- Markos Moulitsas, author and creator of the political commentary weblog "The Daily Kos" will speak at Williams on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 8 p.m. in the '62 Center for Theatre and Dance. The title of his talk is "The State of the Nation."
Moulitsas is famous for his weblog "The Daily Kos," (Dailykos.com) which publishes news and opinions from a progressive point of view for a wide audience.
The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Call the '62 Center box office at (413) 597-2425, Tues. - Sat., 1 -5 p.m. for reservations.
Launched in 2002, The Daily Kos attracted one million unique visitors in its first year, helping to catapult weblogs to popularity. Now, a premier political community, Dailykos.com receives about 600,000 visits every day.
Moulitsas says that he founded the blog, because he was offended "that the freedoms he pledged his life for, which he believes were so carelessly being tossed aside by the reckless and destructive Republican administration."
The Daily Kos' correspondents include former President Jimmy Carter, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, in addition to a rotating team of contributing editors.
Moulitsas is the co-author of "Crashing the Gate: Grassroots, Netroots, and the Rise of People Powered Politics." Drawing in part from his year of work as a political consultant for the Howard Dean 2004 presidential campaign, "Crashing the Gate" extols a "new kind of popular political movement" combining the internet, grassroots movements, and labor unions with big donors in order to affect a "broad change in the political landscape of the United states."
As a young Republican, Moulitsas campaigned for congressman Henry Hyde before joining the U.S. army and being stationed in Germany. After witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall, when Moulitsas returned to the United States, he switched his support to the Democratic Party.
He received his undergraduate degree from Northern Illinois University and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law.
Moulitsas has been named one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics by People en Espanol, one of PC World's "Most Important People on the Web," and ranked third in Forbes "Web Celeb 25" rankings.
