2008 Reunion Lecture: The Changing Face of Journalism

All the News That’s Fit Won’t Fit

Kate Stone Lombardi ’78, columist and regular contributor to The New York Times

Journalism is in a state of transition. The amount of information available is unprecedented and is at anyone’s fingertips on the web — for free. Print journalism, on the other hand, has been called the “incredible shrinking industry.” Advertisements are down drastically, and there is no doubt that the newspaper business is in trouble. This talk focuses on what it’s like to be on the print end of local journalism, the challenges it presents, and what the future might look like. Kate Stone Lombardi ’78 is a columnist and regular contributor to the Regional section of The New York Times. Her work has also appeared in the National, Metro and Education sections. She has also written for many magazines, from Parenting to the Williams Alumni Review. She is the winner of six Clarion Awards for Journalism from Women in Communications. Following her graduation from Williams, she received her M.S. from The Columbia University School of Journalism.
