EPH Notes...

THE FIRST YEAR 15

GOOD HEALTH IS NOT DEFINED BY BODY SIZE.
IT IS A STATE OF PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING!!!

MYTHS:

  • All first-years gain 15 pounds...
  • It is impossible to lose weight once you have gained it...
  • You will gain weight if you have a snack after dinner...

FACTS:

  • A study of college women found that first-year and sophomore women gained miniscule amounts of weight during the school year, most of which they lost the following summer.
  • Eating frequently (i.e. every four hours) throughout the day increased your metabolism.
  • Since college students often eat dinner between 5-7 PM, and are awake until midnight or later "studying," they usually need a late-night snack for sustenance. Suggestions include: Air-popped popcorn, graham crackers and milk, fruit, low-fat yogurt and fruit, a piece of bread with a thin layer of peanut butter.
  • Increased physical activity will help prevent weight gain. Suggestions include: Taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking the long route to class, walking around campus during daylight as a study break, dancing in your room, going to the sports center and using the facilities....
