Sabbatical Grant Program

Applications for supplemental sabbatical grants should be submitted to the Dean of the Faculty's office by January 15th of the year preceding the planned term of sabbatical. Instructions for applying are detailed below.

Supplemental sabbatical salary grants are available to tenured faculty to support projects for professional development while on leave. The supplement can be applied either to a one semester mini-sabbatical (3/4 pay for one semester after 3 consecutive years of teaching) or to a full sabbatical (3/4 pay for one year after 6 consecutive years of teaching). Grants will provide either 1/4 salary or the amount necessary to bring 3/4 salary plus any outside grant or other outside remuneration to the level of the annual academic salary, whichever is less.

Please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Consult with your department chair and the chairs of any relevant interdepartmental programs to be sure that the timing of your leave and any unpaid extensions of that leave are consistent with department and program needs. This should already have been done and should be reflected in the departmental and program staffing reports that were sent to the CAP last spring
  • You should explore the availability of outside funds and grants. The Grant Support Task Force will be happy to help. The task force consists of administrative staff who are routinely involved with one or another aspect of the grant seeking process. It currently includes Keith Finan, Mary Ellen Czerniak, and Rebecca Ohm. See also: Grants information website. One member of the task force, Keith Finan, serves as First Point of Contact (FPC) for all inquiries about prospects for outside funding. Someone who is not sure how to search for funding sources using the information available on the web page or who would simply like help in narrowing down the opportunities to a manageable number of viable sources should talk with Keith (x4352).

  • If you already have full funding, please accept our congratulations. Please also let us know. It is still possible that the College will award you additional research funds.
  • Submit sabbatical grant application to the Dean of the Faculty's office by January 15th of the year preceding the planned term of sabbatical.

A completed sabbatical grant application will include:

  • a project proposal including a title, abstract, project description, and results expected;
  • a list of any outside agencies being approached for support;
  • the results of professional work done during and since the last leave;
  • a current CV;
  • assurance from relevant chairs that the leave is consistent with the needs of the departments and programs affected (Faculty Handbook, Section II.M).

Applications will be considered on their own merit, not in competition with others.

Note - If you receive any outside remuneration during the period of your sabbatical, you should immediately notify Keith Finan (x4352) in the Provost's Office. Grant applications frequently require you to list the expected support from your institution. As this program is supplemental, you should answer that Williams will provide you with 3/4 salary for one semester.
