Math Placement Guide

Course descriptions for each Calculus and Statistics course are included below. Use this decision tree to place yourself into the appropriate Calculus and Statistics courses, and complete the Math Placement Form online in PeopleSoft. All students should select an appropriate Calculus level, even if you don't intend to enroll in calculus for fall semester. Other departments use calculus courses as prerequisites, so it is important to have your background on record. The Statistics placement is optional.

fy math

MATH 103 Calculus I - This course is designed for beginners (those who have had less than one semester of high school calculus) and assumes no previous study of calculus.  More advanced students may not enroll in MATH 103.  Topics include functions, limits, derivatives, a review of trigonometry, and an introduction to exponential functions and integration.  Students with an AB-1 on the AP exam enroll in MATH 103. (Prerequisite: MATH 102 or the equivalent)

MATH 104 Calculus II - This course includes a review of differentiation and of elementary integration, and continues with further techniques and applications of integration, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. The level is aimed at students who have had one to two semesters of calculus or who have received BC-1 or AB-2 on the AP exam.

MATH 105 Multivariable Calculus - This course includes vectors, geometry of space, partial derivatives, multiple integrals, and infinite series. It is geared toward students who have a strong background of two or more semesters of calculus in high school. Scores of BC-2 or AB-3 indicate placement in MATH 105.

MATH 106 Multivariable Calculus – This course covers the same material as MATH 105 except that infinite series is replaced by Stokes theorem.  Scores of BC-3 or higher or an integral calculus course with series indicate placement in MATH 106.

MATH 209 Mathematical Methods for Scientists (Prerequisite: MATH 105 or 106)

MATH 211 Linear Algebra (Prerequisite: MATH 105, 251, or 209)

MATH 251 Discrete Mathematics    Students with a strong background in calculus and/or computer science, consult department.  Prerequisite: MATH 104, or MATH 103 and CSCI 134)

STAT 101 Elementary Statistics and Data Analysis This course provides an introduction to statistics and data analysis at a level that does not assume any calculus. (Prerequisite: MATH 101 or equivalent)

STAT 201 Statistics and Data Analysis This course covers much of the same material as STAT 101, but uses calculus.  It also supplements specialized statistics courses offered by some other departments.  (Prerequisite: MATH 105, MATH 106, or permission of the instructor)
