SOC 222(S) Citizenship, Community, and Culture*
In South Africa, blacks and whites struggle to live together in peace and equality. In the former Yugoslavia, ethnic groups that managed to contain their animosity for decades now rip their nation apart in a bloody civil war. China and Hong Kong experiment with "one country, two systems." Germany struggles through the process of reunification, while Russia battles one breakaway republic after another. In each of these cases, nations are redefining the borders of their social communities, determining who belongs, who is excluded, and how membership is to be defined. This course examines different constructions of citizenship, including classical, liberal, nationalist, and socialist formulations and their implications for the social community. Requirements: class presentation and two papers.
