HIST 314 History of Modern Brazil, 1822 to the Present (Not offered 1999-2000)*
This course will examine the major themes of Brazilian history from Independence to the present. Beginning with the relatively (by Latin-American standards) easy transition from colony to independent empire, we will analyze the hierarchies that have characterized Brazilian society and their relation to the political and economic evolution of the Brazilian nation-state. The course will give particular attention to questions of race, national identity and popular culture, women's sexuality and machismo, and democracy and authoritarianism in social and political relations. Evaluation will be based on class participation, two short (4 -6 page) papers, and a take-home final exam. Group C
