HIST 209(S) Europe in the Twentieth Century
This course will offer a survey of some of the important themes of twentieth-century-European history. Organized topically and thematically, the course will consider European society on the eve of World War I; the impact of the War on European thought and culture; the Russian Revolution; economic and political reconstruction in the 1920s; the Depression; the rise of Fascism; World War II and the Holocaust; the establishment of postwar social democratic welfare states; the "economic miracle" of the 1950s; the uprising of 1968; the development of the European Community; and the 1989 revolutions in Eastern Europe. Taught via discussion, the course seeks to introduce the student to the major ideologies and institutions that have shaped Europe in the twentieth century. Requirements include: class participation, a midterm exam, quizzes, and a final take-home essay. Group B
