HIST 203(F) The Early Middle Ages (Same as Religion 217)
An introduction to the history of Western Europe from the "fall" of Rome (ca. 300) through the First Crusade (ca. 1100). We will explore such subjects as the survival of Roman culture and institutions; the growth and consolidation of the Christian Church; the conversion of Europe; the tensions between church and state; the nature and function of feudalism; the rise of towns; and the relationship between Europe, Byzantium, and Islam. Classes will consist of a short lecture/reading and discussion format. Evaluation will be based on class participation, two short papers, and a final essay exam. Groups B and D
