GERM 108(S) Topics in German Language and Culture: Austria
This course will use the study of contemporary Austria, Austrians and the Austrian language to continue the development of advanced reading, writing and speaking skills begun in German 107. Once the center of a vast empire, Austria has tended to be overlooked as the twentieth century has proceeded. In fact, though, contemporary Austria represents a laboratory of the complex issues facing post-Cold War Europe. Its population is remarkably multicultural, and becomes increasingly so year by year. Its language is rich and dynamic, incorporating Slavic and Latin influences into its Germanic basis. The course will use a variety of written, audio, video and cyber-materials to explore some of the issues facing contemporary Austria and to get to know its language. Conducted in German. Requirements: active class participation, including one group presentation, regular short written assignments, final project. Prerequisite: German 107 or the equivalent.
