ENGL 108(S) Forms of Revenge+

Even in its most brutal expression, revenge lies close to art and this affinity has been exploited by writers in almost every period and medium. Revenge is as basic to the suburban sitcom as it is to ancient epic, the detective novel, and the medieval fabliau. In this course we shall consider how the nature of revenge is shaped by the forms that contain it and how it, in turn, shapes those forms. Works by Homer, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Poe, Neil Jordan and Lucille Ball. Requirements: 15-20 pages in the form of short papers. No prerequisites. Enrollment limited to 19. Two sections.
