ECON 518 Population and Labor Force Change (Same as Economics 380) (Not offered 1999-2000)*
This course examines the effects of the three components of population change-fertility, mortality, and migration-on labor force and population growth and their relevance for general development planning. Topics include economic and social forces affecting family size, relations between per capita income and mortality rates, factors inducing rural-urban migration, informal labor markets in urban areas, costs of population growth, and experience with population programs. This is a seminar in which active participation is expected. In addition to a final exam, there will be heavy emphasis placed on the preparation of individual research papers on some aspect of population or labor force change. Undergraduate enrollment accepted with instructor's permission.
