ARTH 534(S) Andrea Palladio
This monographic seminar will be dedicated to the leading architect of the late renaissance in northern Italy. Topics will focus on the ideological and economic circumstances of his career, and on the significance of humanist culture in the late-sixteenth century. Specific topics will include Palladio's interest in antique architecture; his palaces for the local aristocracy in Vicenza; his villas in the "terra ferma;" his churches for Venice, and his relation to Venice in general; his writings (Quattro Libri and others); the "Teatro Olimpico" in Vicenza and finally his legacy (Palladianism in Europe and the U.S.A.).
