ARTH 421(F) Italian Late Medieval Art: 1250-1425

This course explores the painting, sculpture, and architecture of the late Dugento, Trecento, and early Quattrocento in Rome, Siena, Florence, and northern Italy. Principal artists studied: Pietro Cavallini, Duccio, Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, the Lorenzetti, the Pisani, Arnolfo di Cambio, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Ghiberti, and Masaccio. Special topics for discussion: the Gothic style in Italy, the survival of the ancient Roman style, the influence of Byzantium, the rise of mercantilism and the republican city-state, the impact of St. Francis, the Black Death, the International Gothic style, and the "rediscovery" of linear perspective. Requirements: two oral reports and a term paper. Prerequisites: ArtH 101-102. Enrollment limited to 12.
