ARTH 271(F) Survey of Indian Art*

The history of art in South Asia over the last 4,000 years is one of diversity and continuity; a chart of civilizations colliding as the traditions of Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and British India retreated or advanced on battlefields that were political, economic, and cultural. Works of painting, sculpture, and architecture played an important part in this interaction. Through the use of classroom slide presentations and visits to collections of Indian art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Williams College Museum of Art, students will be encouraged to explore how these profoundly dissimilar cultures in India adapted and borrowed from each other as they preserved or transformed their identities both culturally and politically. Evaluation will be based on midterm and final examination, a short paper, and class participation. Enrollment limited to 40.
