ARTH 224(S) Romanesque and Gothic Art and Architecture
A survey of the major works of architecture, sculpture, monumental mural decoration, stained glass, book illumination and the minor arts produced in Western Europe and Byzantium between approximately 1050 and 1400. As in ArtH 223, lectures will focus on questions of style, content, function, patronage and audience and thus will attempt to understand the art of the period within its larger social, political, devotional, intellectual as well as art historical contexts. Among other issues, the course will trace the impact upon the visual arts of (and of the visual arts upon) Benedictine monastic life, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, the Crusades, the growth of the town and the university, the establishment of the mendicant orders, the rise of lay piety and private devotion, and the blossoming of late medieval (predominantly female) mysticism. Requirements: midterm, final exam, paper. No prerequisites.
