SOC 307 Law and Disorder (Not offered 1998-99)

Whose order? Whose law? Whose justice? This course will ponder the always variant and contested conceptions of order and disorder, law and lawlessness, and justice and injustice. The course includes an analysis of the origins of the criminal law in the West and an appraisal of historical and contemporary relationships between underworlds and upperworlds. Special consideration to the origins of police and police investigation in London, Paris, and New York, complete with a history of police corruption and municipal reform movements in New York City from 1857 to the present day. Also an examination of the social, cultural, and moral paradoxes posed by the American criminal justice system. Seminar format. Requirements: class presentations, and major paper. Enrollment limited to 20. Permission of the instructor required.
