PSYC 356(F) Special Topics in Psychopathology

The way we feel, and the way we behave, are to a large extent determined by what we think. Oftentimes our thinking is distorted or irrational. These distorted thoughts may lead to decreased motivation, sadness, anger, and a variety of psychopathologies including depression and eating disorders. This course will focus on the role of cognitive processes in the development and treatment of these conditions. Topics to be covered include sports motivation and performance, body image distortion and dissatisfaction, cognitive theories of depression and outcome research on eating disorders, depression and programs that enhance motivation. Requirements: two one-hour exams, class participation, and a written and oral presentation. Prerequisites: Psychology 251 or 252, or permission of instructor. Empirical Project
