Political development in the eleven southern states of the Old Confederacy. The course examines the mechanisms and consequences of the restricted franchise under white supremacy policies and the rise of bi-racial government in the aftermath of the Voting Rights Act. The focus is on current election and voting trends, changing patterns of leadership, development efforts, and the rise of neo-supremacists. Requirements: a midterm, a paper, and a final exam.
