PSCI 219 Constitutional Law (Not offered 1998-99; to be offered 1999-2000)
A study of the courts in the American political system emphasizing the United States Supreme Court and the exercise of judicial review. The focus of the course is on one of the most vital aspects of politics: interpreting and applying the nation's fundamental rules. Much of the reading is of Supreme Court opinions that illustrate and define the structure of power in a constitutional democracy and the rights of individuals under the Constitution. Requirements: a midterm, a final exam, and a critical paper of short to medium length. No prerequisites. Open to first-year students with advanced placement credit in American Politics.
