PSCI 101 (Section 02) Seminar: Politics of the Death Penalty (Not offered 1998-99)
In two close rulings during the 1970s and 1980s, the Supreme Court first restricted, then allowed and expanded the use of capital punishment. A number of states now use the death penalty; many do not. This course will consider issues raised by capital punishment in this context of uneven use. The course will consider the issues of morality and deterrence, as well as the role of race, class and gender in the debate. Requirements: three short papers, three written exams, including a final. Enrollment limited to 18.
