MUS 114 American Music (Not offered 1998-99)
A survey of musical development in this country from the seventeenth-century psalters and eighteenth-century New England tunesmiths through the genteel tradition, the rise of jazz, and the growth of art-music from the Boston academic tradition to the major American composers of the twentieth century. Two lectures per week. Evaluation will be based on class preparation and discussion, a series of listening quizzes, and a final project.
