HIST 356 The Origins of Modern Warfare (Not offered 1998-99)

An investigation of the methods and institutions for waging war from the Hundred Years War through the Second World War. Major topics for assigned readings and discussion will include: the transition from private to public armies, the development of permanent standing armies, the increasing use of military force in pursuit of national rather than particularistic or dynastic goals, and the relationship between these changes and current social, economic, and technological developments. In addition, each student will write a substantial research paper on an aspect of military history during the period covered by the course. Topics for research may include warfare at sea as well as on land and may extend to non-European areas of the world where European or American military power was being exercised. Enrollment limited.
