HIST 324(S) Women in the United States Since 1870 (Same as Women's and Gender Studies 324)

This course explores the history of women in the United States since 1870. Focusing on the themes of women's relation to the economy (with attention to both paid and unpaid work in the home), sexuality, the family, political and social movements, and changing ideals of womanhood, the course aims to present women's history both as an integral part of American social and cultural history and as a unique subject of investigation. We will explore the ways in which race, class, ethnicity, and region combined with gender to shape women's lives, and will look at both the tensions between women of different groups and the issues that have united them. Our readings will draw on autobiographies, fiction, oral histories, speeches, and secondary works. Evaluation will be based on a midterm, a final exam, two short interpretive papers (4-6 pages), and class participation. Group A
