HIST 106(F) The Old Regime and the French Revolution
This course will explore the origins and nature of the French Revolution of 1789-1815, one of the defining moments of modern history. We will approach the event through many avenues-primary sources, biography, grand theses, images, and fiction. In the process we will come to understand more deeply the world of eighteenth-century France, the nature and sources of the Revolution, the complexities of defining the "causes" of great events, and the varied methods of the modern discipline of History. Evaluation will be based on class participation, several short essays, and a self-scheduled final exam. Enrollment limited. Preference to first-year students.
