HIST 102 Power and Popular Culture in Modern Mexico (Not offered 1998-99; to be offered 1999-2000)*
This seminar will use an examination of the vibrant and diverse popular cultures of twentieth-century Mexico to explore the defining characteristics of politics, society, and economy of the country's modern history. Discussions will aim to open up the complexity of regional, religious, ethnic, and gender identities in popular culture, while analyzing the relations between popular and official Revolutionary cultures. Course materials will focus on primary and non-traditional historical sources, including fiction, paintings, music, film, testimonials, and ethnography; substantial reading will nonetheless be required. Enrollment limited. Preference to first-year students.
