ENGL 219(F) Introduction to Literature by Women (Same as Women's and Gender Studies 219)

This course will consider literary works written by women as occasions where women acknowledge and confront both each other and a literary culture which has traditionally defined feminine identity and excluded female voices. While including a wide range of women, the course may study in greater depth such writers as Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Christina Rossetti, Adrienne Rich, Sylvia Plath, Margaret Atwood, Toni Morrison, and Louise Glück. Requirements: one 4- to 5-page essay, one 6- to 8-page essay, open-book midterm exam, and a take-home final exam. Prerequisite: English 101. Enrollment limited to 40.
