ENGL 216(S) Introduction to the Novel
A course on the development of the novel as a literary form, with particular attention to techniques of narration and to the changing cultural status of the novel. Among the texts likely to be read are: Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey; Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights; Charles Dickens' Great Expectations; Henry James' The Portrait of a Lady; Virginia Woolf's Jacob's Room; Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita; and one contemporary novel. Requirements: two short papers, quizzes, midterm and final exams. Prerequisite: English 101. Enrollment limited to 40.
